Pymatuning Valley Greenway Trail

Originally part of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad, the goal of this project is to convert the rail path to a continuous, off-road trail to provide the residents, visitors, and businesses of Ashtabula County with safe, easy, and convenient transportation and recreation.

Environmental Design Group provided surveying, environmental analysis, geotechnical engineering, permitting, trail design, and documentation for this project. The trail was designed as an ADA-compliant 10-foot asphalt surface meeting both AASHTO and ODOT design criteria. Challenges to the project included multiple road and private farm crossings, heavily degraded railroad drainage infrastructure, poor subgrades, and abandoned railroad bed erosion.

The completed project will reinvent this circa 1871 rail line to an elevated experience in beautiful Ashtabula County.
